I love the topography of the driftless region. I love the high hills and ridges, the deep river valleys that cut through the underlying rock, the rocky outcroppings sometimes seen on the heights, the deep ravines slicing the hills and valley walls. Unfortunately, photographs don't always effectively capture the beauty. Autumn colors certainly work better than the barrenness of spring. These photos were taken in April 2007.
We were driving on the stagecoach route east of Galena, IL, that took us to the top of a ridge. The view was gorgeous so we stopped and I shot the panoramic series. I do not have panoramic mode on my camera. I have to shoot individual sections and then piece them all together. I use a tripod for this. You can control the speed of the display's revolution with your pointer. Click on the photo.
The top photo is the Apple River and canyon wall at Apple River Canyon State Park.
I love the ravines of the driftless region. Unfortunately, I never seem to be able to capture them adequately in photos. They slice through the hills, or in this case, through the sides of the valley walls at Apple River Canyon. We found these ravines along the Primrose Trail, having climbed the steps and turned left. The trail follows the bluff for a while, then turns away from it and that's where the ravines are. The overlook photo at bottom was also taken along the Primrose Trail, at the enclosed overlook structure.
I'm not real pleased with my various bluff photos. It's hard to see the bluffs, though the river is pretty.
This is a place you need to visit in person to truly appreciate. I enjoyed it very much. It was well worth driving over from Galena.
