Go HERE to view DeSoto House newsletter and some current flood photos. Very tragic!

The panoramic image at right is Galena, IL as viewed from atop the levee. I shot over the tops of the first line of buildings because they were mostly industrial types and not real attractive. You can control the speed of the display's revolution with your pointer. Click on the photo.

We made this trip in April 2007 and stayed at DeSoto House Hotel, which we enjoyed very much.

At top is Dowling House--oldest house in Galena. It's downtown and caught my attention as I was wandering Main Street with my camera.

Next is a front view of DeSoto House and Main Street. DeSoto House contains three restaurants, several shops, a parking ramp, and the large hotel section.

The view of the back side of DeSoto House was taken from atop the levee, and includes the top tier of residential homes above the downtown.

Passing through the floodgate upon our arrival to town was a surprise. We explored and probed to learn what that was all about. The floodgate is part of the levee that guards the downtown from the floods that the Galena River is prone to. Past flooding has been disastrous so the protection is essential. The levee has a paved walkway on top and is fun to explore. There are also two footbridges for crossing the river.

Galena's downtown resides on the narrow floodplain of its river, in a valley of steep sided walls. Most of the residential homes are built above the floodplain and up the steep sides of the valley. The photo of a Galena "sidewalk" gives some perspective of the height and steepness. Note the upper section of stairs, even though they are a little hard to see in the photo.

I can't photograph Galena without including the levee and river. Downtown is on the left side of the levee.

Downtown Galena is so charming; I had to end with another downtown photo.
