During the summer of 2009, one of our sons umpired for the Northwoods League, which includes a LaCrosse team. We drove out to LaCrosse in August to see one of his games, and also take in some sightseeing. After all, the driftless region is a favorite place -- anywhere in the driftless region.

The approach to LaCrosse along I-94 west is a spectacular introduction to what is beautiful about the driftless region -- the high ridges and deep valleys. We access the Interstate at Tomah, where it feels like a sort of gateway.

One of the first things we did was head for downtown LaCrosse, on the east bank of the Mississippi. The park along the river was very lovely. It was better than the views, so I photographed the park.

From there we headed toward the bluffs on the east side. They are beyond the city and stand like a sort of fortress. Grandad Bluff was obviously a tourist spot so we headed there. It was quite a climb (in the car, of course) but well worth it. The view of the valley below was spectacular. Too bad my photos don't really capture the size, the depth.

We headed for home the next day. Roche a Cri State Park is not very close to LaCrosse, but it is in the driftless region, like LaCrosse, and not far off the route home, so we went there and explored a bit.
