Shape of stone is irrelevant. Either setting can be used for either of these shapes, and many others, cabochons or faceted.
Except the boulder opal, all the settings on this page were worked using one or the other of the two distinctly different methods explained in the pamphlets. Though the patterns are written for the specific settings of the purple or green stones shown, each general technique is easily adapted to an endless array of creative variations.
Settings require some loops and twists that are not necessarily beginner techniques. If you are a beginner, I suggest you buy some cheap practice wire and work through the setting instructions a couple of times before actually working it in gold or silver.
The methods presented are my "takes" on how these settings are worked. I did not learn the techniques from anyone's published material, but have studied the appearances of many set stones and come up with ways to achieve the settings I wanted.
