Soak a bunch of raffia in warm to hot water for about five minutes--long enough so you can unroll the strands. Split it into a few thin lengths; four seems to work well. Drape it over something to air dry. As they dry, they will curl length-wise into fine, strong cords that are perfect for stitching. Simple.
