My visit to the Wolf River Dells was with one friend only, as I had never before been to this place and wanted to reconnoiter. I'll be back!

The Dells are not as photogenic as I would have liked, mostly because they are so big, plus I was not able to find a place on the bank from which to look almost directly into the narrows. Nevertheless, this place is worth seeing, and worth hauling the camera along.

The Dells are actually a pretty canyon of what I believe is pink granite, and I'm guessing part of the Wolf River Batholith. The cliffs are tall and straight, the river wild and fast. In June 2004, following weeks of record rainfall, the sight and sound of the rushing water gives one an adrenalin surge. Many rafters were taking advantage of the deep, fast river. I might take a turn myself in the near future. It brought back memories of youthful adventures, though I have never run this particular section of the Wolf.

Access is via Hwy. 55, a few miles north of County M on the Menominee Reservation, then turn west on a dirt road that is well marked. Keep to right; you won't miss it. The prettiest part of the dells is a short walk downstream along the river; follow the path. Do check out the upper dells as well, which is the section near the concession stand/parking area. There is a $0.50 fee per adult (waived for rafters). Bring sturdy walking or hiking shoes. Be prepared to climb around on rocks at the edge of cliffs. I believe rental rafts were also available nearby.

High resolution prints of all my photos, in the sizes listed below, matte finish, are available for purchase. I'm not a professional photographer, therefore, not very pricey.
